Tax Return Switzerland

In Switzerland, the tax return is a legally required process that ensures all taxable persons meet their financial obligations. This allows the cantons and the Confederation to generate the necessary funds for public services and infrastructure. The tax return records income, assets, and deductions, enabling the authorities to determine the correct tax burden.

Difficulties with the Tax Return

Filling out the tax return can be complex and time-consuming. The most common difficulties include:

Understanding tax laws: Swiss tax laws are extensive and can be complicated.

Determining deductions: Many taxpayers are unsure which deductions they can claim.

Completeness of documents: Gathering all the necessary receipts and documents can be challenging.

Advantages of a Tax Expert

A tax expert can significantly contribute to optimizing your tax return:

Expert knowledge: Tax experts are well-versed in current tax laws and regulations

Tax optimization: They can optimize both income tax and wealth tax to minimize the tax burden.

Time savings: By handing over the tax return to an expert, you save valuable time and avoid mistakes or tax penalties.

Questions about Smart eTax

Do I have to file a tax return with a B permit?

Do I have to file a tax return with a B permit?

Yes: Employees with an annual income of more than CHF 120,000 and a B permit initially pay withholding tax, which is automatically deducted from their salary. However, you will be obliged to submit a regular tax return.

The withholding tax already paid will be credited after the tax return has been submitted. Foreigners with a B permit in Switzerland therefore do not pay tax twice.

Perhaps: If the annual gross income with a B permit is less than CHF 120,000 or the threshold value of the respective canton, one usually only has to fill out a tax return if the taxable assets amount to at least CHF 100,000 and the income from these assets amounts to at least CHF 2,000.

Subsequent ordinary taxation also takes place if you:

have taxable assets of at least CHF 150,000 at the end of the tax year or tax period, or
in a tax year you have other income of at least CHF 3,000 that is not subject to withholding tax (e.g. income from self-employment, alimony).

Do I have to fill in a tax return with a C permit?

Yes! Anyone living in Switzerland and holding a C permit must submit a tax return, which is called a "tax return" in Switzerland. Foreigners with a C permit must therefore pay their taxes for several years, just like all Swiss citizens.

At the beginning of the year, you will automatically receive your personal tax return from your last registered municipality of residence as of 31 December. You pay your taxes to this municipality of residence.
